Abstract
Background: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurological disease thatcauses muscles to weaken and atrophy. The symptoms are progressive and spread
from one part of the body to another, eventually leading to increasing disability.
The disease is incurable, which can lead to feelings of anxiety, futility and worry.
It is therefore important that the nurse has the ability to create a safe environment
throughout the course of the disease. The nurse should have the knowledge and
ability to contribute to maintaining good nursing care that adds to the quality of
life.
Aim: The purpose was to describe nurses’ experiences of caring for people
with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
Method: A literature review based on eight qualitative articles where the analysis method followed Friberg’s analysis model.
Results: The analysis revealed three main categories, nurses’ resources, nurses’
attitudes and the emotional work. A total of six subcategories were compiled
based on the main categories.
Discussion: The method was discussed on the quality concepts, Credibility, Dependability, Confirmability and Transferability. The discussion of the results highlighted three findings, Lack of knowledge, person-centered care and cooperation in teams as well as the emotional work.
The findings are discussed based on the global goals, McCormack & McCance
nursing theory and ethics.
