Abstract

Background: The covid-19-pandemic is the deadliest pandemic in the last century with over five million casualties worldwide thus far. Covid-19 symptoms emerge as a regular cold for most people but may develop into severe respiratory symptoms whereas intensive care might be required. To reduce transmission of the virus, as well as for their own safety, healthcare professionals must take precautions such as an extended use of personal protective equipment. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe nurses’ experiences about nursing care of covid-19-infected patients in inpatient care. Methods: A general literature review consisting of qualitative studies. Results: The analysis resulted in a variety of different aspects that nurses perceive affects the nursing care of covid-19-infected patients. Twelve studies were included consisting of 197 nurses' lived experiences. The results were divided into the main categories Concern and uncertainty, Emotional strains, Limitations for nursing care and Communication. Discussion: The methods of the literature review is discussed to ensure rigor and is based on the four criteria credibility, confirmability, dependability and transferability. Two main findings are discussed in the results discussion which is about perception of time shortage and increased workload aswell as the importance of communication in the care relationship. Main findings are discussed regarding ethical aspects and in comparison, to McCormack and McCances’ person-centered care model. Conclusion: Nurses experience multiple effects on nursing care regarding covid-19-patients. Further research of the subject is required to ensure good conditions for nurses to provide high-quality care during current and future contagious outbreaks.
