Many people will suffer from grief at some point in their lives and because work is a substantial part of life, many will experience periods of grief while in the workplace. Employers therefore play a significant role in an employee's grieving process. The purpose of the study is to investigate how employers respond to employees experiencing grief and what possible governing documents, such as policies, exist in the workplace. The material was collected through seven qualitative and semi-structured interviews which were then processed with a thematic analysis. Findings show that employers acted by extending a helping hand in the form of support and flexibility to meet the individual's needs. The employers also had a formal obligation to act and respond in the event of employees experiencing grief without there being specific rules about how to go about doing this. The analysis of participant input showed that employers generally approach each incident of grief on a case-by-case basis, where the subsequent actions on the employer's part are a helping hand and the formal obligations deemed as necessary to extend. The response to the study's inquiry is that all employers have provided some form of support and that there have been no governing documents to support the employer. The conclusion that the authors draw is that the responsibility to respond to each instance is placed on the individual employer and that a governing document could be beneficial. The authors believe that an employee has the right to a reasonable level of assurance in their workplace regardless of who their employer is.
