Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the professional role of the special educator and to investigate the tasks and time spent on each task by the special educator. Based on the study's purpose, two research questions were formulated to highlight the special educator's role and tasks. In the analysis, the study used the systemic perspective linked to the following systemic theory: wholeness, parts, levels, relationships, systems, and variation. The study's semi-structured interviews enabled the collection of qualitative data, with participating respondents consisting of local and central special educators. The results showed that the special educator's job description in the municipality where the study was conducted is clear. The special educators perceive that guidance, relationship building, and intervention work are their primary tasks, which also take up much of their time. The results indicate that the special educators in the municipality are consistent regarding the importance of good cooperation between the special educator, principal, teachers, and guardians and collaborating with teachers to prevent and promote health to create an inclusive preschool.
