Abstract
The purpose of the study was to examine five special educators' experiences of the special education assignment and the profession's development potential. Qualitative interviews have been used to access the informants' perceptions. The result shows that challenges can be divided into four areas. These are challenges with the role of the special educator, remedial and emergency work, professions' view of students, as well as organization and time. The special educators believe that there is a lack of clarity regarding their role and that it contains tasks that do not always belong to their profession. They also believe that they work a lot on an individual level and not as much on a group level as they would have liked. Furthermore, they say that the work is often of a remedial and urgent nature and that preventive and health-promoting work is not done enough. Another challenge is other professions' view of students, where students are considered to be carriers of problems. Finally, they say that the design of the organization is of greatimportance for their work and that they experience a lack of time to perform the tasks they want. The development opportunities identified were supervision and conversations, development work and collaboration with other professions. The informants believe that through supervision and conversations, they can support and help the educators to assist students in need of support. Development work was seen as a development opportunity as the special educators together with others could be able to learn and develop together. Finally, they felt that an improved and expanded collaboration with the teachers would have been desirable.
