Background: Psychiatric illnesses are common and can be caused by several underlying factors. People with psychiatric illnesses often suffer from co-morbidities, which results in people being common recurring patients in somatic care. Lack of education and knowledge in care regarding psychiatric diseases can result in stigma and negative prejudgments. Aim: The aim is to describe patients with psychiatric illnesses' experiences of stigmatization against psychiatric illnesses in somatic care. Method: This study is a general literature study based on seven scientific articles with qualitative design and one mixed method study where only the qualitative part was used. Results: The analysis demonstrated that patients are negatively affected by somatic care stigmatization. The results have been divided into two main categories with five subcategories: 1) Internal stigma: Self-doubt, Experience of being declared incapacitated and Not being involved in the care, 2) External stigma: Nonperson centered treatment and Targeted care. Discussion: Three main findings were conducted: Nonperson centered treatment, Targeted care and Being declared incapacitated. The findings were analyzed and discussed on the basis of McCormack and McCances (2010) person-centered nursing theory, the nurses’ code of ethics as well as from a societal perspective.
