Abstract
Outdoor activities are being performed outside in natural and cultural landscapes and contribute to benefits such as health, education, local growth and to draw attention to natural and cultural environments. The activities takes place within the framework of public rights and the 10 national outdoor life goals. As cultural environments are a resource for outdoor life, they need to be protected. This study will therefore examine how the county administrative board work strategically to maintain a balance in management, usage and conservation of the cultural environments.Protection and care of the cultural environment is a national concern to secure the cultural environment for future generations and those who maintain care and maintenance are the county administrative board and cooperating partners. Management consists of practical guidance documents and documents that are used by everyone involved in the management of the cultural environment. This study is based on semi-structured interviews, a qualitative method. The interviews performed with informants from three county administrations boards, based on an established interview guide.
The results show that there are different views on cultural environments as a source for outdoor life, the informants notes that it is basically about visitors, not just in outdoor life purposes. Primarily it is about trying to balance usage and conservation, and that the management of cultural environments varies depending on who owns the land and how the cooperation with the owners work. In summary, the county administrative board's work is to entice people to go out into the landscape, the goal is to keep the cultural environments alive and contribute to better public health through increased movement.
There are plans prepared for future events, which are created based on the idea that things can change quickly and that these plans must be available to put in place when needed. Information is the key in the work of reaching out to the public in the event of changes that may occur. On the other hand, there are already problems in the form of financial cutbacks which mean that the cultural environments are at risk of being set aside and this includes that outdoor life could be affected as well.
