Student thesis: Bachelor

The purpose of this study is to examine young people's stress and anxiety on a general level that is around school, work, family, friends, social media, etc. and understand how they handle stress and anxiety. The study examined young people who had turned 18 years of age and are in their final year of Swedish high school. Their stories about anxiety and stress, how they use different tools to prevent and manage anxiety and stress and also how their environment can support them and/ or prevent or contribute to increased stress and anxiety are interpreted through previous sociological research on mental health. Previous research has shown that young people experience high stress and anxiety from school and that preventive efforts are needed for young people to cope with the challenges to be able to handle various situations and changes that take place in the world around them. This study finds, in line with previous research, that it is not only the conversations that strengthen the individual but the sense of belonging to a collective is needed and it is mainly help from the adults that is needed to deal with anxiety and stress, feel that he/ she becomes part of society, to feel understood that makes it easier to move on to the adult world.
