Abstract

Background: Communication is a fundamental component of human interaction and is essential for understanding patients’ needs. In the absence of a shared language, the possibility of mutual understanding is limited, placing considerable demands on nurses to maintain equitable and safe care. The increasing linguistic diversity in Sweden has contributed to language barriers becoming a significant challenge within healthcare. This has led to a growing need for interpreters to ensure patient safety and effective communication. Aim: The aim was to explore nurses’ experiences of communicating with patients through interpreters. Method: A literature review with a qualitative approach was conducted to gain a deeper understanding of the phenomenon. The study was based on a total of 10 scientific articles with a qualitative design. The articles were identified through structured searches in the databases Cinahl and PubMed. All articles were quality appraised using the Kristianstad University review template for qualitative studies. The analysis was conducted inspired by Friberg’s five-step model for qualitative content analysis Results: Based on the results, three main categories can be identified: striving for person-centered care when using interpreters, Communication challenges when using interpreters and to navigate interpreter-mediated conversations in nursing care. Discussion: The findings will be discussed from a lifeworld perspective, an ethical perspective, a person-centered perspective, and a societal perspective.
