Abstract

Our present times is characterized by volatility, uncertainty, complexity and
ambiguity in many areas. To work as a leader, in a managerial role, implies
having to navigate complex issues in a way that makes co-workers participate
towards the same goals. Within the framework of present leadership ideals and
control systems, managers are expected to handle the relation to their co-workers
in a trustful and developing manner. Expectations on the managerial position are
extensive and leadership development is assumed to aid managers in their
mission. The essay explores managers own opinion of what they believe has
influenced them in a way that led them to take on their leadership in practice in a
more appropriate way. What made an impact in a way that really matters? The
empirical material was collected through managers written stories, answering
questions sent to them via mail. The texts were analyzed with thematic analyze
method in order to find patterns in the stories. Four main themes; self-insight,
self-awareness, presence and complexity summarizes the empirical material with
quotes from the stories being presented under each theme. The development of the
human being behind the managerial role appears as having a significant meaning
for the ability to handle complexity and the relation to the co-workers in a
constructive manner. The stories in the empirical material enables a reflection on
the design of leadership development.
