Abstract

Background: The theoretical framework of the thesis is focused on Person-Centred Nursing, which emphasise the importance of patient participation in care. The experience of care is viewed through phenomenology and world view, the individuals’ prior experiences and current conditions reflect how they perceive the experience. The nurse’s role is defined by relevant guidelines. The definition of a woman that applies to this thesis is presented, with the exclusions explained. A presentation of relevant laws is presented with a focus on equal rights to healthcare. The current condition of the emergency department and staffs experience with Person-Centred Practice is explained. Aim: The aim of this thesis was to explore women´s experience of the meeting with nurses in the emergency departments. Method: The study is a literature review based on qualitative perspective. Included are nine research papers, found through systematic searches in PubMed and Cinahl Complete and a manual search in Supersök. The papers were analysed through Kristianstad University review template for qualitative papers. The papers were later analysed through the four-step model by Friberg. Results: Women´s experiences were presented in four categories: To have control, To take up space, To not be believed and To have support. Discussion: The method discussion is based on Shenton´s four qualitative criteria and the results discussion is focused on the categories connected to Person-Centred Nursing Framework and autonomy.
