Background: Diabetes is a disease that affects approximately 5% of Sweden's population and 90% of those affected have type 2 diabetes. The disease has potentially serious consequences that include premature mortality, most notably through cardiovascular diseases. The treatment includes medication and lifestyle changes. Getting the diagnosis brings significant changes in everyday life and requires the individual to take on increased responsibility. Nurses play an important role in supporting and mentoring patients with diabetes in order for them to be able to effectively manage their disease and maintain good health. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe adult patients´experiences of living with diabetes type 2. Method: A qualitative literature study was conducted in which eight qualitative studies were used as a basis for the result. Articles were searched by using the databases CINAHL and PubMed. In order to assess the quality of the articles, the HKR:s review template was used. Results: The result was based on three main categories; A changed everyday life, To be affected psychologically and To feel supported. Seven subcategories were identified; A healthier and better diet, An increase in physical activity, Stress, concerns and fear, Guilt and shame, To feel the positive, Support from the health care system and Support from the family. Discussion: The quality of the qualitative literature study was assessed according to Shenton´s credibility concept, which includes Credibility, Verifiability, Reliability and Transferability. By deepening the understanding of the unique experiences of living with type 2 diabetes, nurses can provide a more person-centered care that takes into account the person's specific circumstances, needs and wishes.
