Abstract

Background: Each year there are approximately 13 000 cardiac arrests in Sweden. Cardiac arrest often occurs outside the hospital, and it is important to start CPR quickly. In the aftercare of a cardiac arrest, the nurse can contribute to good health and well-being for the individual by working with a person-centred care.

Aim: The aim was to describe adults' experiences of life after surviving a cardiac arrest that occurred outside of hospital.

Method: A general literature review based on qualitative articles. The analysis method followed Friberg's five-step analysis.

Results: The results describe people's experiences of life after surviving a cardiac arrest that occurred outside the hospital. Two main categories are presented; Affected self-esteem and Life goes on. Furthermore, eight subcategories are presented; bodily changes, fear and anxiety, a failing memory, shame and guilt, feeling overlooked, searching for meaning and context, a desire to return to old routines and a new view on life.

Discussion: The method is discussed based on the qualitative concepts of credibility; reliability, verifiability, dependability, and transferability. Three findings from the result are discussed: bodily changes, a failing memory and a new view on life. The findings are discussed based on Antonovsky's theory about health. The literature review can be of importance for those who meet people who have survived a cardiac arrest and their relatives, to gain a broader knowledge of how it can be experienced for the person to survive a cardiac arrest.
