Dawit Mengistu

I am a member of the RECS research group at the Faculty of Natural Science, Computer Sciece Department.  My research interests include optimization of machine learning algorithms and big data analysis. 

Research Projects

Research on Machine Learning Methods for Water Treatment: I was involved in a project for analysis of cytometry data collected at water treatment plants.  Methods based on non-metric multi-dimensional scaling (NMDS) are used to classify water samples.

Preventive Maintenance: I am a part of a research project involved in the use of machine learning and image analysis for bridge maintenance.  In this project, I investigate the use of generative deep learning techniques for image dataset augmentation to improve model accuracy.

Beyond RECS, I also collaborate with biomedical investigators to develop machine learning based tools for bioinformatics and medical imaging for molecular and functional analysis of cancers and biomarker discovery. I am involved in developing and optimizing AI-based methods for mass spectrometry data processing, metabolite annotation and integrative analysis of multi-modal datasets (omics and medical images) for marker selection.  

Teaching

My teaching activities are focused on machine learning, generative AI, big data and Internet of Things (IoT).
