N2 - A dialogical participatory action research (DPAR) study has been conducted during2012-2017 with and about Swedish soldiers, veterans and their families, exploring theirexperiences of having a family member deployed abroad, how they manage sociallyand relationally, what support they need, develop and use including solutions of theirown and what they recommend to families with deployed family members. In thestudy participated all together 110 adults. There were 42 soldiers/veterans, 42 homestayingpartners, 21 parents of soldiers and 10 siblings (adults) of soldiers. Some of theparticipants have double connections, for example being a veteran and also a homestayingpartner. The study also includes 37 children of soldiers/veterans of whom 25participated in dialogical interviews of their own and in family interviews. Dialogicalparticipatory action research was conducted during 2012-2017 with and about Swedishsoldiers, veterans and their families, experiencing having a family member deployedabroad in areas of war and terror. It was explored how the families managed, whatsupport they needed as well as the capacity they themselves developed. The studycomprised 110 adult participants, of which 42 were soldiers/veterans, 42 partners,21 parents of soldiers, 10 siblings, and 37 children of soldiers/veterans. There wereparticipants having a double connection, for example being a veteran and a partner.Report III highlights how the division of carrying through a military deployment, intothe phases before, during and after deployment, is a strong simplification of whatunfolds and evolves for military families in the context of family member(s) being deployed. In the deployment cycle of responses here suggested, fourteen phases areincluded: (1) Prior to the mission; (2) The Mission; (3) Just before departure; (4) Departure;(5) Immediately after departure; (6) Before the first period of leave; (7) Duringthe first period of leave; (8) After the first and the second period of leave – in between;(9) During the second period of leave; (10) After the second period of leave; (11) Ending:Homecoming; (12) Returning; (13) Afterwards; (14) Later. This cycle is based ondeployments with a rotation period of six months and, according to the Rest and Recuperation(R&R) program of the Swedish Armed Forces, offering at least two periodsof leave including home trips for the soldiers. In the study is revealed that in the participatingmilitary families, the purpose of R&R is not primarily seen as rest and recoveryor recuperation for only the soldier but for the whole family, and also as relievingand strengthening the whole family in accomplishing the deployment together. Theconclusion is that the recurring periods of leave, R&R, a crucial for the implementationof the deployment and for maintaining living relationships and communication at a distance, both from the perspective of the soldier and the soldier's primary family.
