Current assessment practices frame and measure literacy narrowly without sensitivity to the
wider, complex thinking and problem-solving skills needed for success in the 21st century.
Several researchers highlight the importance of teachers developing a meta-knowledge for
talking about, teaching and assessing multimodal texts (Bearne, 2009; Cloonan, 2011; Cope
et al., 2011) that attends to various semiotic resources as meaning-creating as well as the
overall design of texts. However, models or frameworks developed and used as support for
teachers' assessments are an unstructured domain, and more is needed about the
theoretical perspective underpinning these.
This paper presentation aims to address and unfold this unexplored and unstructured
domain from the theoretical perspectives forming the models or frameworks used for
teaching and assessing digital multimodal representations. This work addresses what models
have informed empirical work and teachers' practice over time. Our proposal relates to the
work on a systematic review of frameworks we are conducting in the research project
Teachers' meta knowledge and assessment practices in digital, multimodal learning
environments (2022-2024). Our goal is to shed light and map the theoretical and conceptual
landscape. Based on the findings we will be able to structure the domain and give
recommendation on further research needed in the related to theoretical and
methodological questions.
